Online Kintsugi Workshop for Beginners: The Art of Repair
The International Museum of Surgical Science hosts a live online beginner workshop in Kintsugi — the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold — led by artist and instructor Mami Takahashi on Saturday, December 12, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Takahashi covers the history and philosophy behind Kintsugi while guiding participants through a repair using a provided kit (a prepared broken porcelain practice plate and specialized materials). First-timers work with the supplied plate rather than a personal object, learning the basic stages of assembly, filling, refining, and applying a gold-toned finish. Participants need a short list of common household supplies (disposable gloves, sandpaper, epoxy putty, etc.), and a detailed supply list arrives after registration. No previous experience required; registration is $100.
