Lecture: Modern Woman—Mary Cassatt's 1893 Mural for Chicago
Annelise Madsen, the curator of the Art Institute's current Mary Cassatt survey, unpacks the story behind Cassatt's lost 1893 mural for the World's Columbian Exposition. *Modern Woman* was one of the earliest public mural commissions by a female artist in the U.S., but the enormous canvas vanished, presumed destroyed. Madsen pieces together what remains and what's at stake in the commission, using related works and archival materials. The lecture takes place Thursday, October 29, from 6 to 7 PM in Rubloff Auditorium. Free with museum admission, but registration is required; closed captioning is available.
