Kintsugi Workshop: Repair and Reconnect
A hands-on introduction to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, led by multidisciplinary artist Mami Takahashi at the International Museum of Surgical Science. Over three hours on Saturday, January 16, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, beginners work with a provided porcelain or ceramic plate, while those with prior experience can bring their own clean broken pieces. The session uses food-safe adhesive and epoxy putty, with all supplies included, and the $75 ticket also covers museum admission. Takahashi, who splits her time between Chicago and Tokyo, frames the practice as a meditation on imperfection and resilience — a reflective, low-pressure way to spend a winter morning.
