ISAC Brown Bag: Horses, lions, and onagers: an anatomical and historical approach to animal iconography in Assyria and Elam
The ISAC Brown Bag series continues with a lunchtime talk by Margaux Spruyt, a Sorbonne-trained art historian specializing in ancient Near Eastern animal iconography. She examines how horses, lions, and onagers are depicted in Assyrian and Elamite art through the lens of veterinary science, using morphological and anatomical details to reinterpret complex narrative scenes in their historical context. Spruyt, now a research fellow at the Sarikhani Centre for Elamite Studies, brings a specialist's eye to a niche subject that rewards close looking. The talk takes place Monday, October 26, at noon in the La Salle Banks Room at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. Free and open to the public.
