Writing the City with the Art Institute of Chicago
Head to the Art Institute of Chicago for a generative writing class that encourages participants to
experiment with how they write about urban environments. Over the course of four sessions, we’ll consider a combination of visual and literary precedents–including Edward Hopper, Joan Mitchell, Amanda Williams, Stuart Dybek, Elizabeth Hardwick, and Renee Gladman–as we write in response to cities both real and imagined.
This class is for writers at any stage who are looking to deepen their practice through sustained investigation of a theme and community-building with fellow writers. Each session will involve a combination of gallery time, writing exercises, discussion, and workshopping. In our final session, all participants will have the opportunity to share a piece of writing that they developed over the course of the class.
Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite notebook and pencil. Writing materials will be provided for those who need them, and gallery stools will be available during each session.
Note: General admission at the Art Institute will be free for all IL residents on Thursday evenings throughout the summer.
