The Story of House Music with DJ Lady D
Offered in partnership with Old Town School of Folk Music. House music has an ethos that makes it unlike any other music. Coming out of the 70s disco era, facing discrimination when going to clubs with extreme door policies for people of color and queer folx, the people decided to do things their own way. In creating safe spaces for people to dance and liberate themselves, a form of unconscious therapy was taking place, and a youth movement of like-minded, anti-discriminatory, anti-racist, and anti-homophobic people were born. Darlene Jackson, aka DJ Lady D, leads this discussion on the history of House music, the conditions that set up its rise, and how it became so endeared worldwide.
