Movie Palaces and the Balaban and Katz Legacy
Robin Simon, a Chicago Architecture Center guide who leads walking tours of the Uptown neighborhood, gives a talk on the movie palaces built by Balaban & Katz—the local firm often credited as the fathers of these fantasy venues that offered escape in the early- to mid-20th century. The program, which ties into the current exhibition "Palaces for the People," takes place at the Uptown branch on Thursday evening, November 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Simon’s presentation is geared toward audiences of all ages and touches on Chicago history, architecture, theater, and old Hollywood. Registration is active. Sign language interpretation is available with at least 14 business days' notice.
