A hands-on workshop at the Douglass branch that blends local history with practical beauty skills. The session centers on Geraldine Lane Mardis, a Parker High School and University of Chicago graduate who worked in orthopedic and cerebral palsy clinics and made headlines in 1939 after being asked to withdraw from a college beauty contest. Esthetician LaGena Cain leads a conversation about evolving beauty standards and a demonstration on accentuating natural features. It happens Tuesday, September 22, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, as part of the Chicago Public Library's Renaissance Project exploring Black history and heritage. Registration is required.
