Meet Chester Commodore: Drawing and Illustration 101

Led by artist Anthony Fowler Jr., this workshop at West Town explores the work of Chester Commodore, the influential African American cartoonist whose decades-long run in the Chicago Defender helped change how Black people were depicted in American media. After a short look at original pieces from the library’s archive, Fowler leads a hands-on session on drawing and comic-book illustration, designed to help participants tell their own stories. It takes place Saturday, November 14, from 1 to 2 PM, as part of the Chicago Public Library’s Renaissance Project series. Registration is required.
