Meet Captain Walter H. Dyett: A Concert Performance
A live jazz quartet performance by the Charles Heath Quartet honors the legacy of Walter Henri "Captain" Dyett, the legendary DuSable High School band instructor whose students included Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, and a roster of internationally renowned tenor saxophonists. The program on Saturday, November 7, from 11 AM to 12 PM at the Uptown branch starts with a brief 15-minute history of Dyett, then moves into a 45-minute set celebrating the Chicago tenor sound he helped cultivate. Presented as part of the Renaissance Project at Chicago Public Library, with support from the Mellon Foundation.
