Meet Captain Walter Dyett: A Concert Performance
A performance at the Clearing library on Saturday, September 5, from 2 to 3 PM that pairs a brief history lesson with live jazz. The Charles Heath Quartet plays a 45-minute set inspired by the tenor-saxophone students of Captain Walter Dyett, the legendary DuSable High School band director whose program launched Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Johnny Griffin, and many others. The first 15 minutes covers Dyett’s career as a formative figure in Chicago jazz. Part of the library's Renaissance Project highlighting Black history.
