Luminary L.Connect: In the Conservation Studio—Eugène Delacroix
Experts from the departments of Conservation and Science and Painting and Sculpture of Europe recently completed an interdisciplinary study of three paintings by Eugène Delacroix: The Combat of the Giaour and Hassan (1826), Arab Horseman Attacked by a Lion (1849–50), and Lion Hunt (1860–61).
Though Delacroix was one of the most innovative and influential painters of the 19th century, these previously little-studied works are only now receiving the attention they deserve. Combining art-historical research with technical analysis, the project explores the historical context and working methods behind the master works.
Join Kim Muir, research conservator of paintings, Elizabeth Wigfield, associate paintings conservator, and Andrea Morgan, assistant curator, in the paintings conservation studio for a closer look at the research and discoveries surrounding these three paintings.
