America: Songs of Protest and Freedom at Washington
This concert at Washington Park on Saturday, September 19, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM uses spoken word and music to trace the country's 250-year history. Written and narrated by journalist Cheryl Corley, the multi-genre performance features a band led by singer-songwriter Lucy Smith and weaves together Walt Whitman, Curtis Mayfield's "This Is My Country," John Lennon's "Imagine," and Beyoncé's "Freedom." It's a thoughtful, non-holiday way to mark the anniversary, presenting America's contradictions and continuities rather than a simple celebration.
